About the role

This role is ideal for a leader who can balance people leadership, operational delivery, and technical expertise while building strong relationships across the organisation and with external stakeholders.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead, mentor, and support Building Consenting Officers to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Co-ordinate workflow, forecast workloads, and ensure resources are allocated effectively
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to support sound, fair, and consistent decision-making
  • Help deliver a comprehensive building consenting service in line with the Building Act and associated legislation
  • Support the day-to-day management of the Building Assurance team alongside the Manager Building Assurance
  • Contribute to service planning, performance monitoring, and achievement of business plan targets
  • Assist with maintaining Building Consent Authority accreditation and registration
  • Develop performance and training plans for direct reports and identify ongoing development needs
  • Foster strong relationships with internal teams, the public, the development community, industry groups, and government agencies
  • Support quality auditing, process improvement, and smarter use of technology
  • Represent the Manager Building Assurance when required

About you

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring a strong mix of leadership capability, regulatory experience, and technical expertise.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills
  • Experience in a building regulatory role or comparable
  • Strong technical knowledge of building and construction practices
  • Excellent understanding of the Building Act and related legislation
  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop team members
  • A strong customer focus, with the ability to deliver service excellence in a regulatory setting
  • Sound judgement, decision-making ability, and political awareness
  • Strong written communication and report writing skills
  • Resilience, adaptability, and confidence working in a changing environment
  • A current New Zealand driver’s licence
  • Ideally you’ll also have competency and a relevant qualification acceptable under the Building (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities) Regulations 2006
