Porirua District Licensing Committee List Member

We’re calling for applications from people interested in joining Porirua’s District Licensing Committee as list members. District Licensing Committees are responsible for making alcohol licensing decisions in Porirua City made under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

We’d love to hear from a wide range of people from all backgrounds – so please do reach out and / or apply if you’re interested in making a difference in your community. Preference will be given to candidates that live in Porirua or Wellington region.

The Porirua District Licensing Committee is a quasi-judicial Committee that reviews applications for alcohol licences and manager’s certificates. You’ll need a bit of flexibility, as you’ll sit on sporadic hearings held by the Committee.

You will be responsible for:

  • considering and determining applications for new, renewal and variations of licensed premises.
  • conducting inquiries and making reports to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (ARLA).
  • conducting hearings alongside other Committee members to determine application outcomes when required.

Work is on an “as required” basis and receive remuneration at a rate of $51.00 per hour as set by the Ministry of Justice. List members will also be reimbursed for reasonable expenses incurred as part of their role.

Please note: This is a contractor opportunity and is not an employment role at Porirua City Council.

It would be fabulous if you have experience with the Porirua community and have previous experience with the alcohol industry. Please note that applicants must not have any current involvement, or the appearance of involvement, in the alcohol industry or alcohol business. Successful candidates will also need to have a satisfactory Ministry of Justice check.

You’ll need to show Council that you:

  • have relevant alcohol licensing experience
  • will demonstrate knowledge of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, other relevant legislation and how they are applied
  • understand Porirua’s people and communities and understand their expectations around alcohol licensing
  • have highly developed decision-making skills and investigative abilities
  • have strong oral and written communication skills
  • will foster meaningful and positive working relationships with other Committee members
  • will have an understanding of tikanga Māori within Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in the licensing process.
