Play Advocate - Porirua

Remember when the streetlights turned on, it was time to go home? Or, because it was sunny, you were told to go outside and play? Remember looking at a park, and seeing excitement and adventure? Well… We’re bringing those memories back, but need help. We are on an adventure to find someone who is passionate about promoting and championing play and creating vibrant communities along the way.

About the role

This exciting and challenging role will see you working across Porirua, championing the benefits of play, and developing a play plan for council going forward. Supported by a nationwide programme and funded by Sport NZ, you’ll drive the implementation of this programme through partners in our community.

Working collaboratively with our internal and external partners, this role will need you to be present in office and/or community for most of your working hours.

You will: 

  • Develop and implement a Porirua Play Plan
  • Influence council activities, design and support play activations
  • Influence the creation of play spaces across Porirua
  • Lead the action and monitoring of activities across council to create play outcomes for Porirua
  • Support projects and work programmes to enable play opportunities in our community
  • Work alongside the national network of play advocates to learning, grow and support each other

Please note that this role is fixed term for approximately 14 months.

About you

This role offers the opportunity to shape play in Porirua, and deliver meaningful change for our community.

You’ll need to show us that you:

  • are a people person and natural collaborator
  • are enthusiastic about working collaboratively and in partnership with stakeholders
  • are inquisitive, and strategic and have proven ability to helpfully influence existing ways of operating
  • have a high level of personal motivation and able to work on their own initiative
  • have an understanding of how to engage with Māori and Pacific peoples and can do so with confidence.
  • are naturally well organised with effective time management skills have experience in play, health promotion or, community development
  • have strong written and verbal communication with experience in report writing.
  • Hold a current unrestricted driver’s licence.
