About the role

In this critical role, you’ll use your ecology, influential and negotiation skills to lead and deliver the Council’s biodiversity strategy and service delivery function.

You will be responsible for

  • providing high quality technical expertise to Council relating to Urban Ecology
  • leading your team in a way of working that builds a constructive and collaborative environment with internal and external stakeholders
  • developing and delivering a biodiversity strategy for Porirua City, working pro-actively with community and agency stakeholders.
  • develop and implement a framework for capturing the City’s biodiversity assets, sharing with relevant departments to influence decision making.
  • develop programmes for biodiversity action, to engage people with nature, and foster pro environmental behaviours.
  • have a leadership role in delivery of biodiversity actions across all Council teams and influence the work programmes of others
  • advocate and provide advice on best practice ecological restoration and protection methods for indigenous species and ecosystems across local and regional programmes, whether they are council, iwi or community led.

About you

You’ll have a strong background in ecology, strategy delivery and leadership, and have a passion for improving Porirua City’s natural environment. It’ll be great if you also had a good understanding of relevant legislations such as the Resource Management Act, Local Government Act and the Reserves Act.

You’ll need to show us that you have:

  • a tertiary qualification in Ecology, biodiversity or equivalent experience
  • effective leadership experience with the ability to create high performing teams
  • demonstrated knowledge in ecological restoration/biodiversity management practices
  • a demonstrated track record in achieving results through their own efforts and others
  • the ability to lead and inspire people to get involved in biodiversity projects and activities
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to be a confident and effective public speaker
  • a professional and management perspective with objective demeanour when positive or negative/difficult situations occur
