Library Assistant (Children’s)


The library team provides a range of library services, collections, and spaces to the residents of Porirua City that support the community in relation to literacy, knowledge, information, research and study, recreation, and leisure activities.

All about the role

This popular role will see you working part-time in the bustling Children’s section of our City Centre Library. You will work Monday to Friday, inclusive, between 9am and 1:00pm.

Your role requires you to assist with library services that encourage literacy for ngā tamariki o Porirua.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • children’s desk customer services
  • assisting with, and taking turns independently delivering, programmes and events in the children’s library
  • presenting the children’s library in a warm and welcoming way
  • issuing and shelving of library material
  • physical processing of new material
  • promoting library events to our users
  • basic library catalogue maintenance

Porirua City is a living wage accredited employer and the hourly rate for this position is $29.00.

All about you

It would be fabulous if you have a strong desire to encourage literacy for children.

You’ll need to show us that you:

  • have experience working with children
  • have the confident to present to groups of up to 100 people
  • know your way around a library catalogue, including accessing e-books
  • have experience devising and presenting children’s programmes and events
  • take responsibility for your own work, and prioritise multiple tasks efficiently
  • can work autonomously and are also are a team player
  • have the ability to meet the physical requirements of the role, e.g. shelve and move bins of books, ability to stand for long periods of time as necessary for customer service and collection maintenance, ability to master the fine motor skills required of physical material processing
