Building Officer (Inspections) / Senior Building Officer (Inspections)

All about the role
You will be a key part of an effective and engaged team who deliver high quality Building Assurance services. What you’ll do
- Deliver high-quality, professional building inspection services across a range of building applications
- Carry out inspections in accordance with approved plans and the New Zealand Building Code
- Provide clear, practical advice to applicants, customers, and stakeholders on building legislation and compliance requirements
- Record decisions and document reasons in line with legislative requirements and internal quality procedures
- Manage consent documentation, variations, and accurate time recording for invoicing
- Investigate historic building consents, complaints, and building disputes through to resolution
- Undertake pool barrier and building warrant of fitness audits when required
We are open to appointing this role as either an Officer or a Senior Officer depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. Please make it clear in your cover letter which role you want to be considered for.
What you’ll bring
You’ll have strong technical building knowledge, a sound understanding of the building regulatory environment, and a customer-first approach. You’ll be confident building relationships, making clear decisions, and working collaboratively across a wide range of stakeholders.
You’ll need to show us that you have:
- Proven technical expertise in building and regulatory compliance
- Qualification acceptable under Regulation 18, or willingness to complete one
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills
- Strong documentation, record-keeping, and time management skills
- A positive, solutions-focused attitude and ability to work well under pressure
- Current unrestricted New Zealand driver’s licence
- Ideally good knowledge of the Building Act 2004, and authorisation to undertake rapid building assessments
To be considered for the Senior Officer you’ll also need to have:
- A high level of technical building knowledge and significant work experience in the regulatory environment
- Experience in providing professional building consent processing and approval to a category of building work of Commercial 1 or above
- Experience in mentoring and coaching others on a technical level and providing feedback
- Ideally some investigation skills and experience in building act enforcement provisions
